The ability for crops to withstand flooding has always been something that farmer's have dreamed of. In times of flooding, farmers are often left with fields that can't be planted and crops that have drowned. The loss of these crops to natural disasters such as flooding can be greatly reduced by increasing the plants' ability to withstand these disasters.
In this study, technologies such as NMT allowed researchers to monitor the fluxes of Ca2+ in and out of rice seedlings. Their findings bring them and other scientists closer to altering plants' ability to withstand flooding and waterlogging. Plants with this ability would solve many problems for farmers worldwide as their crops would not die so easily in a flood. Not only will these flood resistant crops help in the case of natural disasters but they would also be helpful in the industrialization of plant factories. Plant factories often use hydroponic techniques and have found that crops that are more resistant to flooding produce higher yields than those which are less resistant.
